Thoughts on puzzle 17 (Sports Section)

wait, I didnt move letters not belonging to the clue and it worked perfectly. That way would give you more than one possible solution.

No need to move/pass through other letters, just a clean path.

THERE, that’s the MOST confusing for me…
I’ve crossed over letters like nothing to solve it while it clearly states not to…
That’s extremely misleading. Someone said “reading comprehension is 60% of it” but I consider this assertion almost offensive, to be honest.
Of course, there is only one way to rearrange the letters in the end, or I wouldn’t be here bragging about it, yet, the instructions are misleading, because you just have to move the letters to form the words by following the order in which the letters are spread over the board, but it doesn’t matter if there are other letters in the path, just form the word as DICTATED by the WORD itself (there is only one possible way to make the word TENNIS in 6boxes starting from T to the final S, either it’s upside down, reversed or not), all that matters is that all THE WORD’S LETTERS follow a LOGICAL path to complete the term orderly. What’s in between serves nothing and doesn’t impede you from completing the puzzle.
There, this is the controversy some of us straight tinkerers have had.
Logic is important for some of us. If something is illogical, yes, some of us have problems figuring out stuff that’s allegedly coherent while it’s not. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:
I mean, it took me one Monster energy drink and 3 espressos to get it straight!
How am i supposed to sleep now? :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

This was EXTREMELY hard to understand, although eventually I understood it. Here is some advice to those who are struggling with it still.

  • Read the comments here. They are very helpful, and while they may not cover all the confusing parts of it, they cover most of it.

  • Do NOT overthink this. I got stuck on this because I thought it was allowing for wrap-around (of the answers and/or the tiles whilst moving them) and a bunch of complex stuff. In the end, it is very straightforward (the only thing that the instructions that should be revised is that the grid should be reset minus the already solved letters each time a word is solved). Again, IT DOES NOT USE WRAP-AROUND!!!

  • This challenge is (probably) best solved when visualised through other means. For example, I used a scrabble board and a notepad to calculate and visualise where everything needed to go and how to get it there.

That’s all my advice, I guess.
Btw, note that there are two answers (three, if you use wrap-around, but again, that isn’t correct or needed). Only one is correct.

Took the amount of time to read to get the solutions 20 min tops to move the letters and get the answer and that was done in my head well i did write down the words but I only looked at them once turns out I’m not as dyslexic as I thought

Alright, the last part of moving the characters around took the most time to understand. But reading the comments in this thread made it (for me at least) clearer on how the movements can be done, and how to use the positions of the moved letters to find the word on the extraction grid.

i think it means you move letters on the grid. im using scrabble game to make it easier

you need to extract letters from places you slided letters into not where they started in big grid. hope i helped

you can slide each letter once?

im having serious trouble finding the answer for the clue about surfboards, any help? Im not a surfer so im very lost

Nvm I was I believe I was able to find the final word and i was able to remove two of the words but no matter how i move the last one i cant figure out how to make it work

The surfboards clue is the same word that can be used when talking about hair removal

The letters can each make one move like the Queen in Chess

I also solved it after reading the explanations in this thread. I think the instructions could have been much better explained. I didn’t need any clarifications for puzzles 15 and 16.

I solved it after a little while of staring blankly at the page for 3 hours

You do not actually have to move letters that do not belong to the first word however I agree that the phraising was a bit misleading.

That’s exactly how I did it!

After reading the rules a bunch of times it finally clicked. It felt rewarding solving it after those first moments of the instruction confusion. Reading comments here only after i solved it but that’s okay. Glad to see I’m not the only one who got a little bit confused at first. Good luck everyone!

I know that the puzzle has now expired. But to give a hint: Read the instructions very carefully and pay attention to the wording. To solve the puzzle, it is important to follow a certain sequence of steps.

yes its solvable. follow instructions to the letter. its so easy that you will probably overthink it and overcomplicate it.

its not easy. it was pretty difficult to find the correct order of letter sliding
