Yes, trial and error, using an excel spreadsheet (color coded squares) with repeated copies of the puzzle on the same page so I could see what worked and didn’t work.

There was a fair bit of trial & error and backtracking for me too. I opened the grid in MS Paint and started by colouring grid lines between pairs which I knew couldn’t pair up. Then I drew lines connecting pairs which had to pair up. Then I used abstract logic to determine the most likely shapes for each region and (with a lot of CTRL-Z and CTRL-Y backtracking) gradually eliminated possibilities. I kept coming up a square or two short in the middle region but once I’d finally determined exactly how the numbers must pair up in that region, the rest of the grid fell into place.

I have tried again today as I couldn’t find the combination. I’ve finally figured it out and now I can solve the metapuzzle!
